Be a Mentor

It Takes Little to Be Big

Becoming a Mentor is fun, meaningful, and one of the most fulfilling ways to make a difference. You don’t need special skills — just a willingness to show up, spend time, and help a young person see what’s possible.

Matches meet a few hours a month and share simple, everyday activities: shooting hoops, hiking, baking, reading, exploring new places, or just talking about life. Whatever you enjoy, you can enjoy it with your Little — and make a life‑changing impact along the way. You don’t have to be perfect, you just need to be present!

What Being a Big Looks Like

Our mentoring programs are designed to fit real life. Volunteers choose the program that matches their schedule and interests.

Community‑Based Mentoring

  • Meet on your own schedule — typically evenings or weekends
  • Spend at least four hours a month together
  • Choose free or low‑cost activities you both enjoy
  • Help your Little try new things, build confidence, and explore the world

Site‑Based Mentoring

  • Meet at a designated site (school or community location)
  • Focus on academic support, encouragement, and goal‑setting
  • Ideal for volunteers who prefer structured, consistent meeting times

Why Mentors Matter

Research shows that young people with a mentor are more likely to:

  • Improve in school
  • Build stronger relationships with family and friends
  • Avoid risky behaviors
  • Develop confidence and social skills
  • Stay on track for graduation and long‑term success

A few hours a month can change the trajectory of a child’s life.

Ways to Volunteer

Not everyone volunteers the same way — and that’s a good thing. You can support youth in the way that fits you best.

1. Become a Mentor

  • One‑to‑one mentoring with a child or teen
  • Flexible schedule
  • Training and ongoing support provided

2. Join an Event Committee

If you love planning, teamwork, or community events, you can help make our fundraisers and activities a success. Volunteers help with:

  • Bowl for Kids Sake FUNdraiser
  • Swing for Kids Sake Tennis-Pickleball Tournament
  • Big Winterfest Gala
  • Logistics, planning, and day‑of support

3. Volunteer as a Couple

Couples can be matched with one Little and share the experience together. This offers:

  • Two role models instead of one
  • A wider range of activities and strengths
  • A unique, balanced mentoring experience for the child

Ready to Start?

Volunteering just a few hours a month can start something amazing. There are kids waiting to be matched — and you could be the person who changes their story.
