Enroll a Child

Could your child use a Big?

Every great mentoring relationship starts with the right role model. For more than 40 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Piedmont has matched local children with caring adult mentors who help them grow in confidence, build new skills, and see what’s possible.

Parents and guardians feel the impact just as much as the kids — because when a child thrives, the whole family benefits.

How a Big Helps

Research shows that children matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister are more likely to:

  • Feel more confident
  • Do better in school
  • Avoid drugs and alcohol
  • Build stronger relationships with family and friends
  • Develop a healthier sense of self

A few hours a month with a caring adult can make a lifelong difference.

Your Role as a Parent or Guardian

You know your child best, and your involvement is essential. From the first conversation to the ongoing match relationship, parents and guardians are active partners in the process.

You will:

  • Share your child’s strengths, needs, and interests
  • Attend a parent orientation
  • Participate in an in‑person interview
  • Approve the selected Big Brother or Big Sister
  • Approve activities and outings
  • Stay in regular communication with BBBS staff
  • Provide feedback on your child’s progress

When families, Bigs, and staff work together, matches thrive.

Safety Comes First

Your child’s safety is the highest priority. Every volunteer goes through a thorough screening process before being matched with a child.

This includes:

  • A formal application
  • National background checks
  • Reference checks
  • An in‑person interview
  • Orientation and training focused on child development and safety

Once matched, each relationship is supported and monitored by a professionally trained Match Coordinator who stays in ongoing contact with you, your child, and the Big. You’ll also receive child safety resources and opportunities for training.

What to Expect After Enrollment

Once your child is enrolled and matched, BBBS stays connected with your family to ensure the relationship is positive, safe, and beneficial. Staff will:

  • Check in regularly
  • Offer guidance and support
  • Help navigate challenges
  • Celebrate milestones and successes

The goal is a strong, healthy mentoring relationship that helps your child grow.
