Mentoring in Action: Ryan & Micte’s Story
How do you know when mentoring really works? For Ryan and Micte, matched in April 2024, the results are clear. In just one year, Micte has shown big improvements in learning, social skills, and work habits—and he lights up whenever he talks about his Big Brother, Ryan.
Ryan is intentional in his mentoring, partnering with Micte’s teachers and support staff, while also creating fun experiences outside the classroom. Together, they’ve built a bond that is helping put Micte on the path to success.
Ryan shares what mentoring means to him:
“Big Brothers Big Sisters has given me the chance to give back while forming a lasting relationship with Micte. He brightens my day just as much as I brighten his. That’s what makes our bond so special.”
One of Ryan’s favorite memories was at the end of their first spring together:
“I bought Micte a book he loved and asked him to remember one fact from it over the summer. When I came back in the fall, he still remembered—and that showed me how much our time together matters to him.”
Micte’s teachers are noticing his growth, but Ryan says the impact goes both ways:
“I try to teach Micte life lessons, but often those lessons reflect back on me. In many ways, he’s a mirror that helps me grow too.”
Ryan’s advice to new mentors?
“Make time. Your presence means the world to your Little. And use that time well—every small moment builds a deeper, more rewarding connection for both of you.”
