We are excited to introduce our July Match of the Month: Te’Hilliah and Dessie!
Te’Hilliah and Dessie were first matched through our school-based program in March 2023. From the very beginning, Dessie has exemplified the qualities we seek in a Big Sister—generous with her time and committed to building a strong, trusting relationship with her Little Sister.
Wanting to further support Te’Hilliah’s growth, Dessie requested to transition to our community-based program. She believed this shift would allow her to make an even greater impact—and it has. Over the past year, Te’Hilliah has blossomed in confidence and capability. Her teachers have noted marked improvement in at least two subjects during the school year.
Te’Hilliah’s family has warmly embraced Dessie, seeing her not just as a mentor, but as a beloved extension of their own family.
Here’s an exclusive insight from Dessie about her experience and why she chose to get involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Piedmont:
What inspired you to become a Big Sister?
I was inspired to become a Big Sister because growing up, I always had someone to look up to. As I got older, I realized not everyone is that lucky, and that everyone needs someone in their corner. I wanted to be that positive influence for someone else, just like I had.
What motivates you to maintain a connection with your Little?
What motivates me to maintain a connection with my Little is seeing how much our relationship means to her. From the way she lights up when she sees me to hearing from her teachers and family about the positive impact I’ve had, I knew this bond was something special. She’s always so proud to introduce me to everyone at her school, and that’s when I realized I couldn’t let her down. On a lighter note, we also just have the best time together! Our time is always filled with laughs and good memories.
What advice would you give a brand new mentor?
My advice to a new mentor would be to go into the experience with an open mind and an open heart. The connection with your Little might not be instant, but with time and consistency, it will grow into something meaningful. Be patient, be present, and always listen. Remember that you can make a difference in even the smallest ways.
