Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Piedmont Receives Signs of Support Grant from Sign-A-Rama of the Triad

High Point, N.C., March 27, 2012 – Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Piedmont has been named as a recipient of a grant for signage as part of the third annual Signs of Support Program.  Sign-A-Rama of the Triad is doing its part to give back to the community by donating more than $30,000 in signage to 57 area non-profit organizations through its Signs of Support grant program. More than 112 non-profit and charitable organizations applied to receive the grants.

“We are so excited about the visibility that this new signage will bring to our organization,” says Krista Johnston, VP of Programs. “We were very proud to be named one of this year’s grant recipients.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Piedmont will get new signage that can be used at events held to raise awareness and for events they host for their Bigs and Littles.
One of our company’s core values is to give back to the community. So it’s an honor to be able to provide these non-profit groups, like Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Piedmont, the event signage that they need,” says Matt Cvijanovic, co-owner of Sign-A-Rama of the Triad. “The Signs of Support program was created to help serve many of these very worthy organizations across the Triad.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Piedmont will officially receive the grant during an award ceremony on Friday, April 13 at 11:00 a.m. at Sign-A-Rama’s offices on Patterson Street in Greensboro. BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF THE CENTRAL PIEDMONT ANNOUNCES BIG OF THE YEAR AWARD:

High Point resident, Richard Worden wins the 2012 Kirby Award for “Big of the Year”

Big of the Year

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Piedmont announced their “Big of the Year” award at the annual Caring for Kids fundraising kickoff event, “The BIG Beach Bash,” at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro on Saturday, January 28th, 2012.  High Point resident Richard Worden was named the “Big of the Year” based on a nomination from his Match Support Specialist, Sarah Zimmer.

Richard Worden has been matched with his Little Brother, Troy Caldwell (sixteen), since February 2007, when Troy was just eleven years old.  They meet several times a month, but if it were up to Troy they would meet daily.  Troy and Richard like to go out eat, play video games, and often participate in activities in Richard’s church.  While the match does share in “bigger” activities such as a day canoeing and sporting events, they are most often found simply spending time together just hanging out.

In addition to normal weekly meetings, Richard has helped Troy with extra needs and experiences, going above and beyond the normal call of duty for a Big Brother.  For example, this past summer, with some help from Richard and his family, Troy attended Camp Lurecrest for a week.  Additionally, Richard nominated Troy for the Smiles for a Lifetime program after noticing that Troy was self-conscious about his smile and even said that he has been picked on for his teeth. Troy was chosen as a recipient of the program and now has braces and is on his way to a perfect smile.

Beyond his relationship with Troy, Richard is a huge advocate for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Piedmont organization.  He serves on the Board of Directors and attends the majority of the Big Brothers Big Sisters events.  If a speaker is needed, Richard is always willing to tell his story including most recently to three different services at his church. Richard is a true example of our goal of “Creating Longer Stronger Matches.”

In addition to a photo slideshow showing Troy and Richard together over the years, guests at “The BIG Beach Bash,” heard speeches from Troy and his aunt, Dee McCoy, about what Richard has meant to them as a Big Brother, role model, and friend.  To conclude the “Big of the Year” presentation, Troy presented Richard with a beautiful trophy and a handshake.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Piedmont is a donor-based volunteer supported network that relies on funding to recruit, carefully match, monitor and support volunteers, children and their parents.  Our program helps children reach their full potential through professionally supported one-on-one relationships with measureable impact.   Their team works with children to “START SOMETHING” by providing them with a positive role model who offers them new perspectives and helps them learn to make good choices.  Children begin to see beyond their home, their school and their neighborhood.

If you want information about becoming a volunteer or making a donation, please call Sarah McNulty at 336 882-4167.
